A restaurant that offers fresh flavors of Mediterranean cuisine
Located in the heart of Rockefeller Center is Limani New York, an upscale Mediterranean restaurant. The restaurant, run by executive chef and partner MJ Alam, formerly of Estiatorio Milos, highlights fresh flavors such as whole fish that arrive daily from the Mediterranean.
Dive into one of the tasty freshly prepared whole fish, refreshing Greek salad, juicy lamb chops, sashimi-quality octopus and more. Enjoy the restaurant’s international wines or specialty cocktails including Mango Martini, Passionate Punch, Fig Cosmo and Mediterranean Mule. In fact, Limani New York offers fresh food in a stunning setting, created by high ceilings, white leather seating, a blue infinity pool, and a white marble bar.
Here, Alam, who is also the consulting chef for the menu at Limani New York’s sister restaurant in Roslyn on Long Island, Limani Roslyn, shares the inspiration behind the restaurant’s opening, the highlights of the menu, what’s next for Limani New York and more.
Lisa Kocay: What inspired you to open Limani?
MJ Alam: “Since my specialty is Mediterranean cuisine, and in particular seafood and fresh fish, it is a unique and healthy option for the people I serve. When guests come to Limani, they come to the fresh fish market and choose their fish, and I prepare that selection. I don’t do anything with too much sauce. I want to serve my guests the best quality ingredients so people can eat healthy and enjoy their food at the same time.”
Kocay: Can you discuss how the menu is selected?
alam: “My Mediterranean cuisine preparations help people enjoy whole fish and shellfish with selections prepared sashimi-style, and I love working with our raw bar. Also, the tomato salad I chose was special as I have a good supplier from Canada. This was my specialty [Estiatorio] Milos. I am always coming up with new ideas from different sources based on the ingredients available – the better the quality of these ingredients, the less I have to do to create a unique experience for my guests. Whatever is brought to me daily is what I will serve, everything comes fresh from our kitchen.”
Kocay: How was the drink menu curated?
alam: “We had our veteran team members choose the wines they felt paired best with our Mediterranean cuisine. Having certain ingredients available, like freshly squeezed pomegranate for our Persephone cocktail, is also an important factor.”
Kocay: What would you consider some of the main menu highlights?
alam: “Our Tunisian Octopus, the Greek Salad, our Kolokithi, Greek Ceviche and then also any fresh fish from our market.”
Kocay: What was the inspiration behind the decoration of the restaurant?
alam: “We wanted to better embody the elegance of the Greek lifestyle. We also wanted the interior to resemble the Limani seaport in Greece.”
Kocay: What’s next for Limani New York?
alam: “We just opened a Limani restaurant in Boston (Chestnut Hill), with another location near Charlotte, NC, and then we’re targeting Boca Raton, Florida.”
